Celebrity Speaker For Hire: Junot Diaz
Currently an MIT creative writing professor and fiction editor at the Boston Review, Junot Diaz has become one of the most well known names in literature. Born and raised in the Dominican Republic, Diaz lived with his mother and grandparents until the age of eight when he immigrated to New Jersey, where he would be reunited with his absent father.
Diaz may be a success story in himself, but a lot of suffering has led him there. The absence of his father for the first almost decade of his life strained their relationship, leading them to no longer communicate. He tells his story of living in extreme poverty, of his sibling in prison and his family suffering. This became the basis for his first series of short story collection, Drown.
Diaz speaks from the heart and from experience. His success is made from hard work and a background which gave him both the strength to excel and the need to.
Works/Achievements:
- Diaz hold the 2008 Pulitzer Prize for Fiction along with a large list of other recognitions for his novel “The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao“. Named “Best Novel of the Year” by The New York Times, The Los Angeles Times, The Washington Post, The San Francisco Chronicle, The Chicago Sun-Times, and The New York Daily News.
- Diaz is also the author of the novels: “This is How You Lose Her” and “Drown“.
