Celebrity Speaker For Hire: Doug Flutie
Doug Flutie is a former quarterback in the National Football League. He first rose to fame while playing at Boston College where he received the Heisman Trophy in 1984. In 1986 he signed with the Chicago Bears and he played with the New England Patriots as their starting quarterback from 1987 to 1989. Standing only five feet nine inches and weighing just 175 pounds, Flutie proved that ability, not size, is what it takes to make it in the pros.
Before entering Boston College, Flutie graduated from Natick High School in Massachusetts. In addition to winning the Heisman Trophy his senior year, he also won the Maxwell Award and the Davey O’Brien National Quarterback Award. He was also granted Player of the Year awards from UPI, Kodak, The Sporting News and the Maxwell Football Club.
In 1986 Flutie was drafted by the LA Rams, but was traded to the Chicago Bears. He was then traded to the New England Patriots in 1987. Later that year, Flutie left the NFL to play in the Canadian Football League, but after 8 years, he returned to the NFL and played for the Buffalo Bills, the San Diego Chargers and once again, the New England Patriots.
In 1998 Flutie and his wife Laurie established the Doug Flutie, Jr. Foundation for Autism in honor of their son, Doug, Jr. who was diagnosed with autism at the age of three. The Foundation has raised millions of dollars for autism, with their main purpose being to provide families with a place to turn when they are in need of support and autism resources.
