Celebrity Speaker For Hire: Dave Barry

Dave Barry is a nationally renowned, Pulitzer Prize winning humor columnist. A graduate of Haverford College, Barry’s writing career began in 1971 at the Daily Local News in West Chester, Pennsylvania where he covered news on local government and events. After this he joined a consulting firm, where he attempted to teach effective business writing but deemed it hopeless. In 1981 as a guest columnist for the Philadelphia Inquirer he attracted attention from Gene Washington, an editor at the Miami Herald and in 1983, Washington hired Barry to be the humor columnist.

Continuing to write for the Miami Herald, articles written by Barry appeared in various other publications such as: Boating, Home Office Computing, Reader’s Digest, and the Chicken Soup for the Soul inspirational book series. One of his articles has been used as the introduction in the book Pirattitude!: So You Wanna Be a Pirate? Here’s How!, which followed Barry’s very public support for “International Talk Like a Pirate Day”. Barry’s debut novel, Big Trouble, was adapted into a motion picture starring Tim Allen, Rene Russo and Patrick Warburton, and directed by Barry Sonnenfeld.

In 2005, Barry announced that he would be retiring for a while to focus on his family. Although he did not resume his weekly column, he still writes occasionally.
