One of the most famous names in women’s soccer, Brandi Chastain is a staple in women’s athletics as well as feminism. Representing her country on the United States Women’s National Soccer Team, she lead Team USA to victory as the team’s defender, midfielder and forward.

Born in San Jose, California, soccer was in her blood from a young age. Leading her team at Archbishop Mitty High School to three consecutive championships. She then took her skills to the University of California- Berkeley winning the “Soccer America Freshman Player of the Year” award. After undergoing double reconstructive knee surgery and missing two seasons, Chastain transferred to Santa Clara University, where she lead the team to two Final Four NCAA appearances. From 1988 Chastain represented her country against Japan and then against Mexico where she scored five consecutive goals as forward. From there Team USA won the world cup held in China. Chastain again made the U.S. National team in 1996 and participated in the 1996 Women’s Olympic Football Tournament, where she had a hand in helping Team USA win the gold medal.

Chastain become world renowned after the “sports bra incident” of 1999 at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, California. After winning the match over China, Chastain celebratorily took her jersey off and knelt on the floor with her fists clenched. This image become a symbol celebrating the power of women’s athletics.

Currently, Chastain lives in Santa Clara, California where she coaches the women’s soccer team at Santa Clara University.

  • Chastain appeared in the HBO documentary “Dare to Dream: The Story of the U.S. Women’s Soccer Team”.
  • Chastain wrote the book “It’s Not About the Bra” about women’s competitive sports and the struggle they face in society.
  • She has been named one of People Magazine’s “Most Interesting People” and one of Street & Smith‘s “Most Powerful People in Sports”.
