Amy Bloom is a New York Time’s Bestseller and one of the literary world’s leading ladies. She has been nominated for the National Book Award and the National Book Critics Circle Award. Bloom has also written numerous articles for periodicals including The New Yorker, The New York Times Magazine, The Atlantic Monthly, Vogue, Slate, and Salon.com. Amy Bloom has had her fair share of experiences. After holding jobs as a waitress, bartender, actress and peanut picker, she graduated Wesleyan University with a Bachelor of Arts in Theater and Political Science. She then went on to do her Masters of Social Work (MSW) at Smith College before becoming a practicing psychotherapist.
Bloom’s first New York Times bestseller was her novel Away, which the New York Times called a “literary triumph”. Away is the story of a young Russian girl who comes to America alone, determined to make a life for herself after the murder of her family. Bloom’s short fiction Where the God of Love Hangs Out was also a New York Times bestseller. Her collection of short stories, Come to Me was one of the National Book Award Finalists, and the short story collection A Blind Man Can See How Much I Love You was nominated for the National Book Critics Circle Award.
Bloom’s first non fiction book, entitled: Normal: Transsexual CEOs, Crossdressing Cops and Hermaphrodites with Attitudes has now become a regular part of sociology and biology classes in colleges across the globe, and has been translated into fifteen languages.
Currently, Bloom resides in Connecticut where she is the Kim-Frank Family University Writer in Residence at Wesleyan University. Before this, Bloom was the senior lecturer of Creative Writing at Yale University.
