A graduate of the Manhattan’s High School of Performing Arts, Ben Vereen has gone on to become one of Broadway’s greatest names. The Tony Award Winner has an array of talents that have been showcased on the stage, television and film. Vereen paved his way into Broadway royalty with his Tony Award winning performance in Pippin, and his notable leads in Hair, Jesus Christ Superstar, and Wicked.

Ben Vereen fought many personal battles which began with the 1987 when his 16 year old daughter was killed in an automobile accident, leaving a void in Vereen’s life. A few years later, Vereen was the victim of a pedestrian automobile accident which caused severe physical injury and required months of physical therapy.

In 2007 Vereen was diagnosed with type II Diabetes Mellitus and he often shares advice and personal experiences about his struggle to overcome this illness.

Following a long career, Vereen has now moved into public speaker on such topics as African American history, continuing education and the importance of perseverance in life.
He still performs an occasional guest role, such as his Prism Award Winning guest appearance on Grey’s Anatomy, and recent roles on Law & Order: Criminal Intent, How I Met Your Mother and Hot in Cleveland.

Works/Achievements:

  • Vereen is a Tony Award Winner for his work in Pippin and received a nomination for his work in Jesus Christ Superstar.
  • Those works also earned him a Drama Desk Award and a Theater World Award.
  • Vereen is a Golden Globe and Emmy Award nominee for his work in television.
  • Vereen has also been awarded with the 2004 Lifeline Celebration Achievement Award from the Community Mental Health Council.
  • Vereen become the first person to simultaneously win “Entertainer of the Year”, “Rising Star”, and “Song and Dance Star” awards from the American Guild of Variety Artists.
  • In 2011, Vereen was given the honor of being inducted into the American Theater Hall of Fame.
